I'm mildly interested in how you know all these dates, Glenn? Just being
observant when people state "it's my birthday"? Or something more sinister

Yuppers, I made a note of different folks' birthdays back in 2001, although
I must confess I'd forgotten to give a 'shout out' to Cov, Robert and Tomo
earlier in the year ...

(It's sort of easier to remember birthdays when they are all in the same
month.)

Of course, of the regulars, you and Sandman were the only ones who'd opted
not to participate, and I respect your respective decisions not to do so.

Hey - I like that expression! - but, no menacing Mandrake.

No offence meant - doesn't sound like you took any - I just think the
concept of b/days is daft.

You mean the concept of observing your birthday (not necessarily by going
back in time to the delivery room), or only the concept of observing same on
this newsgroup?

Oh ...

so instead of UNhappy Birthday, it'd be something akin to a "Being And
Nothingness" version of Happy Birthday, then, right?

More that there's no good reason - in my view - to save your good wishes up
for a particular day of the year. What's wrong with now?

(Or maybe, in sticking with the Smiths theme: "How soon is now?")

I would if I knew the tune, but I don't ever recall hearing that particular
song by The Smiths.

(Besides, even if I did know the tune, I sure can't carry one!)

Actually, I had ...

The night before I moved, I learned that a long-time friend (my partner of
14 years) had contracted cicatricial pemphigoid (cancer of the mucous
membranes) and passed away.

Needless to say, I haven't even been able to function, because I've just
been so devastated.

Just knowing that he suffered eight long months from such a horrible,
agonising disease makes me fall to pieces.

This has been the worst year of my life.

Your comments are much appreciated, Adam.

As you pointed out, we haven't always seen eye-to-eye (looking back, you
weren't always totally wrong about some of the stuff I wrote at times), but
it makes your gesture all the more meaningful.

There's got to be some hope left in this world yet when two people can
disagree and still manage to remain reasonably civil to each other,
otherwise.

You're right, since time only marches forward, nothing's going to bring back
my friend Bob, or change the fact that he's gone forever from this life.

However, as Bob used to point out, one attends funerals as much to support
the living as to show one's respect for the departed.

Hm-m-m, an olive branch from an unlikely source ...

maybe New Zealand should appoint you to the United Nations to resolve that
little problem in the Middle East, next?

Once again, thanks, Adam.

I was born in Farnworth, in Lancashire.
You can carry on being jealous, because I'm (hopefully) seeing them tomorrow
in Manchester, and then I'll be going back to Cardiff in January for the
resched. Wheee! And I think they should sing TCP instead of PCP tomorrow.
Jeanette
WHY, OH WHY did I think you were french??? No seriously, it wasnt just your
name - something in the past is niggling at the back of my mind!!!!! Cant
think what it was now!! So.... a lancashire lass - good for you! :))
And, yes darn jealous now, so gonna have to resched myself to be in Cardiff

Cheers,
Tracy
If you do, let me know and we can try to meet up. As for France, well, I
went to Paris for four nights about a year ago, but that's it.

There's like this clan thing that goes back yonks. When the clan get
together (rare these days!), we all sing it together (good voices or not),
usually drunk and dewy eyed. "Design" is definately the *one* that *moves*
us - probably cos we live in Wales!! But its not just cos we associate with
it, its the power of that particular song, and of course, the wonderful
violins at the end!! <sigh>

How long has this band been around?

From the web site, they seem like such young blokes to produce a song that
even older folks (present company excluded, of course) would sing along
with.

At the moment I've got an American friend staying with me. She and her

in the process of making a documentary about the Manics. They've never
really 'broken' America, and are a lot less popular over here than they were
five or six years ago.

Depends on the colony, I think.

http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-yon1.htm

I guess why we've got it in NZ & Aussie, and you don't have it in Canada is
that we have quite a high ratio of UK TV here, and I'm guessing yours would
be more USA-focused?

I also think theer's more NZ<->UK travel going on, so theer's more language

Yuppers, good guess!

I grew up with a lot of American TV, mixed in with some British and just a
tiny bit of Canadian TV (which is now finally starting to improve, in terms
of quality).

However, when I was attending school (late 60s through to the early 80s),
most Teachers still used British English pronunciations and spellings of
words.

Dunno about now, but judging by Canadian newspapers, they've totally slacked
off.

Of course, I picked up British slang (e.g., "bog" for toilet) from the
telly.

As a point of interest, Kiri, a woman of
British / New Zealand (completely Caucasian) heritage who works at my YMCA,
told me she distinguishes the Australian and the New Zealand accents apart
by the Australian accent sounding "whiny".

And an Australian fellow with whom I correspond claims that the tone of the
New Zealand accent was actually influenced by the Maori.

I suppose this isn't too far-fetched, because American English has been
influenced by Aboriginal people, as well.
Post by Adam Cameron

What with the climate, I can certainly see why more Brits would want to
migrate to your part of the world, over their frosty former colony in North
America:

That show was produced here in Ottawa, in a studio close by to where I'm now
living (in Ottawa's West End).

I've read that that show was actually fairly influential in the U.S., in
that NickelOdeon (I think?) now dumps green slime on the guests of one of
its shows.

(Hey, we Canucks stretch our claims to fame as far as we can get.)

Yeah, sometimes they were right on the mark with their satires.

Other times, it was what I just classify as 'light entertainment'.

Alanis Morissette got her start on that

Of course, when Alanis released her first album (her *real* first album, the
one that came out in 1991), her management was trying to mould her into some
sort of Debbie GIBSON wannabe (against which she later rebelled).

Even then, it was evident that she had some promising talent.

It should also be noted that Peter JENNINGS got his start with the same
station - CJOH.

Yuppers, I still really enjoy those shows when I see them, as well.

"The Red Green Show" actually started as a segment of "The Smith & Smith
Show", which appeared on CTV.

This was then picked up as a full-length show on our educational channel,
TVO.

Finally, as it began to become more popular, CBC took over airing (and
possibly producing?) it.

Most Americans our age range will sometimes also mention "Degrassi", which I
never caught in the 80s because I spent too much time out partying all the
time.

Interestingly enough, that show was originally carried on CBC, and now the
spin-off, "Degrassi: The Next Generation" (no androids, Betazoids or
Kling-ons in this one) is on CTV.

Absolutely. The slime is a famous symbol/device of Nick, and it all
started on YCDTOT.

Problem is, Nick has gone downhill a bit lately, in many people's
opinion. I fondly remember the 80's when I could catch shows
like YCDTOT, Danger Mouse, Livewire (also Canadian perhaps),
Mister Wizard, and a music video show which I can't recall the
name of.

The 90's weren't bad either, with all of the cool NickToons.
Rocko's Modern Life and Ren & Stimpy were great. But maybe
it's just that I'm getting too old for "kids TV", because nothing I see
on Nick these days really captures my attention; although SpongeBob
and Jimmy Neutron can be mildly amusing if I'm really bored. (Which
is hardly never.)

I love her music.
Given her start in show business, I was at first cynical when "Jagged Little
Pill" was released (10 whole years ago now).

I've since grown to appreciate and enjoy her music very much as well.

Even then, it was evident that she
had some promising talent.
It should also be noted that Peter
JENNINGS got his start with the

Really? Interesting.
Yuppers, up till a few years back he used to be seen on Metcalfe Street in
Downtown Ottawa whenever he was visiting (he apparently owned property
there, from what I gather).

"The Red Green Show" actually
started as a segment of "The Smith
& Smith Show", which appeared on
CTV.
Haven't heard of that show. The IMDb
says it was loosely based on a 60's
show called The Red Fisher Show.
More than just "loosely based" - it was an outright parody, and I recognised
it as such immediately, at times having had nothing else better to watch
Saturday afternoons than "The Red FISHER Show".

Most Americans our age range will
sometimes also mention "Degrassi",
which I never caught in the 80s
because I spent too much time out
partying all the time.
I always figured that was a soap opera,
so I never watched it.
Was I wrong?
Dunno, I gather it was like a soap opera for teens, and dealt with a lot of
controversial issues (or what would have been in the 80s).

Yeah, I'll watch 'em if I catch 'em on TV (in reruns, natch).

I still get a kick out of The Great White
North album. Heard their 12 Days of
Christmas on the radio the other day
and it brought a smile to my face!
And to think it started out as a take off (so to speak) on Canadian content
rules.

Which just goes to show you, sometimes the very ideas we discard turn into
our most popular work.

Sort of a running gag on SCTV, as I remember it - (not _just_ Bob

:-) I can't stand dance and/or pop music!

I remember watching American Bandstand as a kid,
and being *so* annoyed with their "Rate-A-Record"
segment. They'd get two brain-dead teenagers to listen
to a new song and then they would give it a score
between 35-98. Almost always you'd get a variation
on two pat answers; a) "It had a great beat you can
dance to, I'll give it a 98, Dick!" or b) "It was kind of
hard to dance to, I'd give it a 40." Perhaps my memory
is just bad, but I dont' recall more than a couple of
times in the 5 or 6 years that I watched that show, that
the teenage actually thought about the song beyond
what kind of beat it had. It use to piss me off to no end!

Now I'm not sure if this experience warped my musical
tastes or not, but I can not listen to music which is made
just to provide a good beat for people to dance to. Like
95% of the stuff you'll hear on pop music stations. I just
require more depth than that.

So, I'm quite sure I would hate her first album. Maybe
I should give it a listen anyway, but I don't want to hear
a "shallow" version of an artist I respect and admire.

But I don't think *she* even wanted the music to be that
way (on the first album), it was just what her producers
wanted her to do. If it's the artist themselves finding their
"voice", then yes, early efforts are very interesting to
listen to even if they aren't up to the standards that the
artist later achieves. But when it's something that is
basically forced upon them so that they can "break
through", then I generally find the music unlistenable.
Does that make any sense? :-P

It reminds me of Tori Amos. Little Earthquakes was an
amazing "debut" album, and she has done some incredible
work since. But what many people don't know, is that
she started her recording career as Y Kant Tori Read,
a mainstream pop metal "band" she put together because
metal was all the rage at that time. The album was horrible,
and Tori doesn't even talk about that period of time at all.

It's kind of funny because even though I had watched
YCDTOT throughout the 80's, I just didn't make the
connection at all until I read an article in a music mag.
So I had already "fallen in love" with JLP before it
clicked in my brain that she was from that show. I
might have avoided the album altogether if I'd known
sooner! And that would've been sad!

That's pro'ly 'cos you've been listening to all the wrong stuff!

I love *all kinds* of music.

Dance music has been part of every culture in every period of history.

If I can't stand a song for any particular reason, it's usually either
because it's
not very original or because it's very irritating (e.g., "The Reason" really
puts the stank in Hoobastank).

Some of the best music from the 80s, whether it was "Rock The Casbah" by
The Clash or "Under Cover Of The Night" by The Rolling Stones, "had a great
beat to it", which shows that you can think and dance - even rock out - all
at the same time.

Although Alanis claimed that was what happened, I'm not quite so sure that I
completely 'buy' that anymore.

Remember, she *wrote* as well as performed her own material from the very
beginning.

For example, when she was only
10-years old, she produced a single entitled, "Fate Stay With Me"; it was in
the pop format.

Alanis decided to take a new direction in 1994, and simply realised that her
earlier work would hold her back from being considered a serious artist.

Ironically, it took the Queen of dance / pop music, Madonna, to sign up
Alanis to a recording deal, by which she became the star she'd always wanted
to be (in her "Fate Stay With Me" lyrics).

Bearing in mind that Alanis was in her teens when she composed her earlier

'language' of teens.
