Well...

Obviously the works of Mr Whedon have the ability to split this group...

;' )

So let me just say this.

Buffy. I thought reall ymatured and came into it's own (much as Whedon
matured methinks)
Angel. Whereas it was watchable.. that was about it.
We know the results of his Alien franchise dealings...

Firefly... I really liked.
I thought it was brave to do Space scenes *as they would be* (IE silent. Cos
in space.. no one can hear...) I liked the charcaters for the most part and
the humour was nicely done.

So..

Serenity.

Went to see a late show last night.

I adored it.

Not too much changing to the TC show ethos. (A little sound in space... I
can hear the execs now!!)
Everything that the Star Wars I-III should have been.

But...

SPOILERS...

I couldn't BELIEVE that Wash was killed!!!

That was harsh! Sudden. And totally unexpected.
Very brave I thought to kill of a main character in such a way. (PArticualry
as he was the closest thing to a *normal* person in the crew and therefore
someone I think *we* would find it easiest to relate to. I always liked his
charcter in the TV show. I only hope he hasn't been killed off so they can
bring in a sub plot across the other films of The captain and his officer
getting it together. (Surely they wouldn;t do Capt and Onara??)

Anyway.. there y'go.

<Covenant talked about Serenity>

I still need to get around to seeing that movie, but
it's on the other side of town. *Way* on the other
side. Usually that doesn't bother me, but lately
I haven't felt like riding the four buses there and
back.

Loved both Buffy *and* Angel myself. Well, except
for what passed for Buffy that final season. I don't
think the Whedon A:R script was all that bad, he
was just such a poor choice for the film. Alien films
and his style just don't even come close to mixing.
It's whoever hired him that should be shot, not Joss
himself.

Maybe I'll get to Serenity on Thursday. I'll let you
know if I do.

I'm also very interested in Paxson's The Greatest
Game Ever Played. Frailty was pretty damn good,
and if heard nothing but positive things about this
new film. Bill "Game Over, Man" Paxson a top-
notch directer? Whoda thunk? :-)

Have a great day! And thanks for the spoiler space!

I really enjoyed Serenity. One of the best films of the year IMHO and I hate
everything else he's done. Apart from Firefly that is.

Serenity.
Went to see a late show last night.
Well, even though I have better things to be doing, and
can't really afford it, I finally saw it today.

I adored it.
It was amazing! Everything I'd hoped it would be and
more.

Everything that the Star Wars I-III should have been.
Funny you should mention that.

Not only is that true, but I think that Mal is exactly what
Han Solo should be like if Lucas wasn't such a wuss.

As Jayne says, "Let's be bad guys!" But at the same
time, they do have ethics. The Serenity universe is so
well constructed, that it works great.

Just putting this in here, for those who don't read
further on because of possible spoilers.

Joss Whedon's next project sounds pretty good.
Called "Goners", it's suppose to be much darker
than anything he's done so far. A real horror film.
As any real fan of Buffy and Angel knows, Joss
isn't all about just being humorous, sarcastic,
and ironic. He can get down in there and do
some real horror. This movie could be great.

But Wonder Woman? Oh, man, I wish Whedon
would stick to original material. Didn't he learn
from A:R? The Wonder Woman fans are going
to crucify him no matter how good it turns out.
Please, Joss, reconsider! Don't do it! Work on
that Spike/Willow idea instead. Please!

OK, now back to Serenity . . .

**Some might consider the following, spoilers. Just
a couple of quotes used as examples of Whedon's
writing. Doesn't reveal any major plot points.**
Plus, I simply love Whedon's sense of humor, and he
doesn't disappoint at all in this film. Outstanding line
from my favorite character, Kaylee, the ship mechanic,
talking about missing out on an opportunity for love:
"Been more'n a year since I had anything twixt my
nethers didn't run on batteries!"

But even more than that, there is the way that Joss turns
what you expect totally upside down (so beautifully done
throughout Buffy and Angel). For example, the tired old
crap that spews out of most movie character's mouths
when they are about to go into danger and might not make
it back. So Mal is about to do just that, and starts, "While I'm
gone, Zoe is in command. Now, if I'm not back in an hour, I
want you to take this ship, take off . . . " Now how does this
typically end? With the leader and everyone else getting all
misty eyed, telling them to leave him, and someone protesting,
and then convincing them that they must leave him behind,
it's for the best. How does Joss finish it? " . . . and you come
and you rescue me!" Zoe replies, sarcastically, "What? And
risk my ship?"

Hope that doesn't spoil things for anyone. I just wanted to
give a couple of examples why Whedon is *brilliant*. If
you haven't seen the movie, what are you waiting for? A
piece of trash like Doom and other cut & paste crap like it?
Believe me, the couple lines above is just the start. This
movie has dozens of quotable lines. My examples are just
teasers, not really spoilers.

I couldn't BELIEVE that Wash was killed!!!
It was quite a moment! But Whedon doesn't shy away
from doing things like this.

You never know with Joss. I never thought I'd see
Buffy with Spike, but he did it.

But I don't think that's why he did in Wash. He just
likes keeping viewers on their toes, and if that
means that someone has to die, he'll do it. But
unlike the Buffyverse, he can't "cheat" his way out
of this death.

I loved the scene. Don't get me wrong, Wash was
a great character, and the Zoe/Wash marraige
was wonderful and full of potential, but I think Joss
knew he had to make Serenity as good as it could
be, because it might be the last thing he gets
to do in this universe. Us Browncoats hope not, and
the critics loved Serenity, and it did OK box office,
but going in Whedon had to go for it all.

Like you said, it was brave. It makes the film better.
It's sad, but I like the "realism" that they didn't all make
it OK. It made what happens after that more tense,
because you begin to wonder if Whedon didn't *really*
go all out, and kill off a few more people.

Anyway.. there y'go.
It was worth every single penny! Fantastic film.

Have a great day!
