It was SO much better than I expected!

Only low points in it involved characters which I hope we'll never see
again.
(*Rose's* mum and boyfriend.)

The living bin was a bit crap, but other than that....

Eccleston never looks *confortable* smiling, but that just adds a touch of
*creepiness* to an otherwise *bit too normal* Doctor!

VERY surprised at how good Billie Piper was!

Enjoyable all round, but not a true classic, and I wonder how many people
will desert it after the sound-screwup.

Sound screwup? Yeah, the Beeb, after all the hype, royally screwed up by
fading up sounds from Strictly Come Dancing (an annoying reality game show
presented by the appalling Graham Norton) at least twice *during* the
episode!

It felt pretty much like Dr Who about 90% of the time (and like a weekday
childrens' show the other 10%) which is more than the TVM managed!

tiny spoilers that barely count as spoilers, but some space anyway...

CE is brilliant- he really cracks me up (especially that mad grin when he
says life in the TARDIS is always this dangerous.) Neither impressed nor
unimpressed by Billie. As for his reaction to Rose's mum coming on to him
being a sign of the Doc's asexuality- I dunno, I'd react exactly the same
because she's a scrubby old chav!

It was a bit of a thin romp - not much actual story - but a good way to
introduce the show's core values to a new generation - and clearly a
regeneration story as well. The production values were great, but most
importantly it was real Dr Who, and CE makes a great Doctor.

And thank God it didn't have that bloody shaky-cam direction that seems to
infect everything these days.

The bad- not mad about about the teaser for next time during the episode's
running-time. The theme is great but some of the music was a bit bleh
(actually I think it largely provided the 10% childrens' TV atmos!) and
please, somebody get rid of Camille Coduri.

I loved it though - it's real Dr Who, it's really back, and it looks like
the later episodes will be way better than something that's already good!

Best TV episode since... Curse Of Fenric, I guess.

Well this *is* Doctor Who. It's never going to get any acting awards. I
didn't mind him really; sure, he was hamming it up a bit, but it didn't
seem out of line with a lot of the rest of it. The mother's acting (or

Well... here's my problem. *I* understood what was going on because I'd
seen "Spearhead from Space" (the first Dr Who I ever saw, as it happens)
and to a lesser extent "Terror of the Autons", so I knew what an auton was,
and what the Nestene Conscienceness was all about. But I challenge anyone
who *didn't* know the back story to make head or tail of what was going on.
I guess they had to do character intros as well as having a "Dr Who" story,
but I guess this is why quite often the pilot for a TV show is double
length. This story should definitely have been told across twice as much
time. And especially as Dr Who has a precedent of having stories that take
100-odd minutes to tell, it wouldn't have been unacceptable to continue
this trend, at least for the pilot.

GOD, yes!
Well everything in moderation. I thought when NYPD Blue started doing it
(this was the first show I noticed it in) I found it rather jarring, but
they settled down slightly and thenceforth the camera work became more an
extension of when the characters are doing, rather than just a means to
record it.

The opposite can also be a problem, as demonstrated in the side-on static
scene composition for the wheelie bin FX shots, which was jarringly poor.
And obviously due to limitations of the FX (~ budget). I know they're
trying to demonstrate that they're not doing all the FX with cardboard egg
cartons these days, but at least when they *did* used to rely on that sort
of thing, it was congruous with the rest of the rest of the camera work
(mostly). In last night's ep, that wheelie bin scene stuck out like a sore
thumb, pretty much announcing "look! special effects!!". Missing the point
that improved special effects are supposed to stand out *less*, not *more*.

Hmm.... I think it's okay.
I had got the impression from press I had read that it was only going to be
a passing nod to the original tune. Seemed pretty much the same to me,
just arranged differently. It was fine. If anything, though, I though the
visuals looked *more primitive* than the latter "original series" ones.

I *liked* the way they did the auton version of the BF. Except the
unnecessary Max Headroom stutter, which I thought was unnecessary. *We get
the idea, already*.

I don't have a TV, so I made a special trip to a mate's house to watch it
last night. It was not sufficiently good to make me make a habit of doing
this (and it's not just around the corner, it was W2 to SE15 - a bit of a
cross town hike). In fact it wasn't sufficiently good to make me
habitually watch it on a *Saturday* night in favour of doing something
else, even if I *did* have a TV. I would watch it if it happened to be on
when I was in front of a TV screen, but that's about it.

However I will follow the press it gets, and will keep an open mind as to
whether to acquire it on DVD when/if it avails itself.

Ah, OK, I see. I'm not so familiar with UK TV patterns, sorry (esp. kids

:-S
Post by David A McIntee

Oh get off the grass. You're really trying that on as an excuse? And even
if we run with that "reasoning", it doesn't really mitigate the fact that
there *was* all the Auton stuff in it, and that it was a bit incoherent,
because it was all so rushed.

The ep could half been a lot better if it'd been spent telling the story of
how an ordinary shop girl meets a time-traveller and hooks up with him.

What we got is a silly young girl abandoning her loving (if both annoying
for the viewer) boyfriend and mother for the first complete stranger that
comes past with a flash car. For all intents and purposes this is what
happens. And it's also pretty much how it feels as one watches it: it
seemed credible that Billie *didn't* get into the Tardis at first. And
reminded me that it didn't seem credible when a couple of seconds later
she'd had a change of mind and decided she would. I was left thinking
"ooh... silly girl... not really thinking of anyone but yourself, are
you?". Not a good message.

But I guess it's a case of the script not making up its mind what it was
trying to be, and dipping its brush in one pot too many (in this case:
two). Again, this could well have been resolved simply by following the
"double-length first episode" standard, and making more (/enough) of both
parts of the story.

But anyway... it was OK: I did actually enjoy it. Then again, I was a
major Dr Who fan when I was a kid, and a lot of that has "stuck", so it's
kinda preaching to the converted, in my case.

That's it in a nutshell - anything can be forgiven (except AR(se)), if its
nostalgic. Just hearing the Dr. Who theme tune brought back all that
anticipation and excitement of the old days!!
We could pick this new episode (and series) to pieces, but at the end of the
day Dr. Who was always tongue in cheek and a little amateur in its
deliverance. Still loved it!

Biggest problem with the *story* certainly.

Had he offered earlier in the *episode* I might have seen it, but the 3

I watched it as a kid too, it was as good as one could get out the BBC.

The special effects were pretty cheesy then, and they are still a bit second
rate now we've had a diet of Hollywood class movies.

When has Dr. Who ever *EVER* found any of his assistants sexually
attractive? - he's normally obnoxious and patronising to them, altho
treating them with a fatherly respect - thats all! And I think most of his
assistants were at least 300 years younger than him to start with!

Who's watching Dr Who tonight?

Adam
Me! Me! Me!! Loved it - it had character, which I wasnt sure it was going
to have. Eccleston is a sexy Dr. and Billie must appeal to the guys in one
way or another.
Seriously, enjoyed it and the dummies were the one thing that scared me
about Dr. Who when I was younger so was pleased to see them make a
comeback!!

Oh dear. I knew this was going to happen. In an attempt to stave off
any further ridiculous play on an old joke, I shall now insert an entirely
gratuitous sexual reference best-suited to a Bruce Campbell flick.

Our Hero: "So....you're some sort of inter-galactic hooker?"
Alien Female: "We prefer the term 'pee-pee wrangler'."

Yet another finely crafted bit of "Dialogue You'll NEVER Hear In A
Sci-Fi-Action Epic", direct from The Needlessly Pompous Bullpen. Move along.

Hehehehe. He said "insert". Hehe. Heheheh. Heh.

The "Egg Man" in a so-so episode about retired vaudevillians
scheming (and murdering) to save old London theatres. The eggs were a
bizarre clown registry; each clown's face-paint is unique and registered
and....painted onto an egg. To find the identity of the evil clowns, they of
course have to go to Cleese, caretaker of this enormous, fragile collection,
and hilarity ensues.

But then the UK version of the
Golden Girls was JUST as bad !
As much as I always enjoyed "The
Golden Girls", it's hard to imagine a
British version of any American show
being anything other than an
improvement.
Trust me.... It wisnae!
I can tell you must be serious - you're speaking in dialect again!

I somehow can't see Dr. Who
playing baseball; you know, being
British and all.
Maybe Rounders ???
By rounders, do you mean cricket?
Nope ! I mean rounders !!!

(I think it's kinda like softball??? BUt it isn;t a *national leagued*
sport. Just something kids play in a park by themselves!)
Post by Glen A. RITCHIE
On another note, I wonder why an American version of "Dr. Who" hasn't been
made yet?
There was!
I'm SURE there was !!!???
(Well, made by an american company IIRC)

Paul McGann as the Doctor???

And always remember the old Peter Cushing movies too !!!
(Or were they Elstree productions?)
Post by Glen A. RITCHIE
I mean, American versions have been made of a lot of other successful
British shows ...

I can't see the Beeb giving away the Doc Who rights ;' )))

If anyone would know, it'd have to be *you*!

After all, you're not just up on the entertainment industry, but *in* it, as
well.

Well, they could always *sell* the rights instead of giving them away;
that's how we do business in North America ;-).

I can't say anything one way or another, because I haven't seen it yet.

You're thinking of Hammer Productions, I suspect. I recently picked
up two Hammers at Wallyworld for a buck each: The Terror (with a very young
Jack Nicholson) and The Satanic Rites of Count Dracula, with Cushing and
Christopher Lee. If memory serves, this was the next-to-last Hammer Dracula
film, and Lee's last - he was fed up with the franchise, and horror/vamp
fans seem to agree Hammer was at the end of the slope quality-wise at this
point. I like the movie, myself - it's got a distinct "Avengers" feel to it
and it's not your usual Dracula flick. Cushing is just amazing, as always.
Lee doesn't have a lot to do, but he pulls it off ok. Cushing plays Van
Helsing (sort of an "I'm my own granpa" thing, hehehe) and just pulls you
into this alternate reality where you can sit around having tea and
chatting, in all seriousness, about how to whack a vampire. Hard-core
horror/vampire fans probably won't like it, but it's a treat for folks who
take their horror in minimal doses. And it just _oozes_ "The 70's!"

The background of Hammer Films is pretty interesting stuff, too.
Apparently the guy who ran the show would, as one movie's production wound
down, shanghai actors into making another quick flick, recycling the sets
before they were torn down, etc. Ya know..."Oh, Jack? A word? Busy? Just a
few lines, won't take a minute. Stand over there..." Really sounded like
great fun, and apparently a lot of people would squeeze this stuff in,
taking scale wages.

Not that I don't believe you, but where'd you get this information, Robert?

Various websites after googling for info on the "Satanic Rites"
flick. Here's a brief overview:
