OK, I thought that'd be an interesting topic. I guess we'll see. And we
all know AR:se sucked, so lets go for the nitpicks, or at least
something more substantive than "Director X is a jackass!", heheh.

The one thing that really grates on me (in a movie I otherwise _like_)
is Hudson's "ultimate badasses" monologue in the dropship (only in the
SE, I believe). It just sucks. I know some people find it funny, but
for me it's just annoying. Nothing I can put my finger on - maybe
Paxton was having a bad day or something, but it just doesn't work. For
me. :)

That monologue was cool. I dunno about you, but I have a military
background including airborne stuff & what he was saying I thought was
very cool. Getting pumped for a drop!

I was a sub sailor, but did commo support for a whole raft-load of SF
ops, including drops, so it's not that. :) And it's not really a
rah-rah session, he's just BS'ng for Ripley. Like I said, I can't put
my finger on it, but it just didn't 'fit'. Maybe it wasn't over-the-top
_enough_, or something. I dunno.

I can't vouch for the CONTENT of what he was saying: it sounds pretty
stupid to me, but maybe it's quite realistic a thing to be saying in such
circumstances? That's neither here nor there as far as my opinion of the
scene is concerned.

The *manner* in which Paxton delivered it seemed a bit flat to me, like -
for example - if PAXTON himself thought it was a bit of a stupid diatribe
to be having to read. I didn't think the scene was convincing, and was
rightly excised from the movie.

Good, good motivational post, Robert :))))

In Alien (and this film is the God of all films for me, I hasten to
add!) - Ash attempting to choke Ripley with the rolled up magazine - it
is so not realistic - its not even in her mouth - its like crammed on
her lips. It naffs me off!
That scene could have been done better.

And.... and... in Aliens - Evil Bishop's silly hanging-off ear! Did we
ever conclude if that was simply a bad makeup scene or something more
sinister? (Shut up, Cov!) :))

Well, if someone was trying to shove a rolled up newspaper in your gob
would you open up and say "Ahhh"? ;0)

I don't find it out of place. Ash was definitely losing his marbles by
this point, and could have easily just choked her with his hands.
There's something about the quiet, overly intense, methodical way he
rolls that magazine up, then tries to force it in her mouth that I find
chilling.

I didnt say it was out of place. I said it was unrealistic. Ash's
malfunction is nasty, his attack on Ripley is vicious - but the scene
is attempting to indicate an actual penetration of her mouth, with the
intent of actually choking her to death. But the magazine isnt even in
her mouth - it is meant to be depicted that way, but it isnt.

Its disappointing - visually.

AH! Ok, I can agree with this - I think it was just too far outside the
'stunt' range of the actors to carry it off believably, and possibly
time/money - consider making a safe prosthetic thingy for Weaver to
bite down on and matching the protruding magazine, the multiple takes
and editing that would be required, risk of injury (heck, maybe Weaver
just got back from the dentist that day or something...)...etc, etc.

Consider all that, but figure that the audience is going to figure,
"Well, ol' Ash does have a major wire loose..." and most people are
going to let it slide.

So, I agree with your observation - it just doesn't really bug me as
much as it does you. :)

Ah, ok, I'll have to watch that again but you're probably right. I
usually pick up on things that don't look right but it probably doesn't
bother me enough.

What does bother me is when Ash's head gets knocked off and his arms are
jerking about in a very stereotypical robot manner. It's like someone
trying to do a very bad robot impression.

well if we're talking about Bishop 2's ear hanging off in Alien 3, I

My least favorite thing about the franchise.....

FOX's belief that they need Sigourney Weaver or Lance Henrikson to keep
the franchise alive.

Even if it means bringing Henrikson back in seperate roles, all of
which screw around with continuity (A3 Droid theory aside)

A while back I'd been surfing genre and review sites, one of 'em was a
sort of point-counterpoint set of reviews for each flick, and there was
some guy that just went freakin' nuts over that scene - you'd have
thought they put Weaver in a french maid's costume or something. Ranted
on and on about sexism, how EVERY single aspect of the scene was sexist
- camera angle, lighting, and this, that and the other. Freakin'
hilarious because he was genuinely pissed off.

Probably! But could never get my head around the fact that all our
characters were portrayed in an *equal* position - almost androngenous
- and then our Ripley has the "strip down" scene. Maybe they should
have stuck to a male Ripley role - then us girlies could have had a
peek at some bulging packages!! :P

Again... this was cut before the cinematic release, wasn't it; and only
appears in the "special edition"? Or is my memory faulty?

To me, it seems stillted, like a run through or rehearsal.
The way he continually says "check it out" seems forced and the "We're here

That my take on it, looking at it from performance POV.

Really? Ah, let's make sure we're on the same page, here - Burke is
peering into the big cylinder and suddenly the the facehugger starts
scrabbling around trying to get to him? And then Hicks delivers the
line? (I thought it was more like "looks like true love to me" or
something, but anyway....oh wait! I get to watch the movie again! Yay!
Thank you!)

OK, I'm seriously interested in a genuine negative view of that scene.

The _only_ real criticism I can think of is that a hugger should have
been able to go through the plastic/glass/polymer/whatever as easily as
it went through Kane's helmet, but obviously that tech is
different/better or whatever, so....what else? Hard to see that scene
as the one that breaks the camel's back, even for a Jimmy hater. :)
