Discussion:
Which DVD has alternate soundtrack?

A few years ago I saw a DVD of Alien that had an alternate audio track that
allowed you to hear Goldsmith's ORIGINAL idea for the opening music. I
just got a DVD that has the original theatrical release and the director's
cut, but no alternate music soundtrack.

What DVD should I be looking for?

Thanks.

The top one, here:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078748/dvd

I'm pretty sure - but don't quote me - that the one in the Quadrilogy box
does NOT have this extra.

OK, I've got that one, and it does have all those soundtracks listed
(and they are on the disk), BUT, and don't quote me either...I think
that _is_ the Quad version. It's got an intro graphic showing all four
movies with a rotating facehugger tail animation and an AWFUL trumpet
fanfare.....anybody with the Quad box confirm?

And if the OP finds/buys it, please follow up here with your best guess
as to what Sir Ridley is eating when he's trying to talk during the
Director's Commentary. I think it's a lollipop. :)

Oh, better description of the case -

Front, top to bottom:

20th ANNIVERSARY EDITION

ALIEN

(egg graphic)

(the "digitally mastered" THX, etc. business across the bottom)

the ten-digit barscan code number is:

(0) 86162 00075 (1)

(I think they all have that opening 0 and ending 1? Or they're not
important?)

But I didn't know the music was actually different - I thought that was
just an option for 'music only'....hhhrrrm. OK, I got the disk out, I
might as well play it. Sheeeeesh.

:)

What you are describing is the Quadrilogy disc, but that is not the one I
pointed you to.

I have both sets here in front of me (well: the discs. I've binned the
packaging).

The 20th Anniversary edition (as above), released in 1999, has the
soundtrack. The Quadrilogy, released in 2003, does not.

My 1999 DVD (region 1) is plain silver, with "Alien" written on it, in the
font used in the opening credits; plus the usual region, running time, and
copyright info on it (and "1999" clearly printed on it. A very plain disc.

To get to the soundtrack, navigate thus:
Main > Extra Features > More > Isolated Audio Tracks > Original Film Score

The 2003 one is a patterned greenish colour, with - it looks like - Kane in
his spacesuit on the RHS. This is also R1, and the disc name suggests it's
the Canadian imprint of it.

I've binned the cases, sorry, but they looked like this
http://tinyurl.com/f3r63 and this http://tinyurl.com/gxx24, respectively
(1999, 2003).

Sorry, I see what you mean now (I popped the disc into my laptop and it
went straight to the main menu... must've remembered where I last stopped
it...).

Yes, so that's the 20th anniversary edition, yes. Which has got the score
on it. I'm playing it now. It's rubbish.

Yes, so that's the 20th anniversary edition, yes.
Which _is_ different from the Quad version then. OK, glad we got
that sorted.

Well...I wouldn't go that far. :) If you haven't yet, watch the
landing scene, when they first hit turbulence? I think that loud noise
is the paint-shakers attached to the seats that RS talks about in the
commentary.

But still, you're not talking about the isolated *score*, you're talking
about the isolated *production track* (which has some music on it).

The score = just the (alternate) music. There is no sound effects on that
track, just music.

Mine says 'original' score. Anyway, listen to the other one. It's
more fun. :)

"Original Score" as is "the one they started out with, but decided to
change it to a different one before they released the film". Not as in
"the one from the original movie".

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread like this, but i haven't been on here
for three months :) Thought i would mention that Ridley Scott is actually
smoking during the commentary, not eating. He certainly likes his ciggies :D

Thanks for the answer. The DVD I have is from the Quadrology, as you said.

Thanks again.
