Right guys - techno wizards! Let me have your individual
recommendations on the safest way of keeping your pc safe. And I mean
SAFE!

Let's just say I was compromised over the weekend and it's costing me
time, money and emotional wellbeing.........

It's difficult to answer the question without knowing specifically the
situation you're trying to protect yourself from, as well as what software,
OS, and networking hardware you have.

A speculative answer would be to download ZoneAlarm and run it, for
starters. Make sure you make a point of keeping your AV software up to
date, as well as having some anti-spyware software running too.

Use strong passwords (alpha-numeric + punctuation), and one(s) that you can
remember (ie: don't write 'em down).

Any email claiming to be from any sort of institution to which you might
have a financial arrangment with (bank, e-bay, amazon, etc) should be
considered bogus, no matter how cosher it looks. NEVER use the hyperlinks
embedded in such emails to go to the site in question to check out if it's
real: type the address into the address bar yourself, or use one of your
own shortcuts.

Back-up your critical data and store it off-site.

Do not let children use your computer.

Using an OS other than Windows is an accurate suggestion, but not a very
practical one, for most people.

Yes. Lovely. Thank-you for that.

Is there also a wikipedia entry to describe those dreadfully boring people
who think "my OS is better than your OS" conversations have any real merit?
Or are actually remotely interesting to ANYONE who doesn't have a propellor
on their head?
